Panicked, Charlie pulls Susan's face out of the pastry to be sure she can breathe. The momentum of her body, slight though it is, goes out of his control, and he is forced to lower her gently to the floor. She does not wake up through all of this, nor does she even begin to stir when he shakes her shoulder and shouts her name over and over in her face. She remains peaceful and still, smiling slightly in her sleep. After a full hour of trying, Charlie carries her to bed and goes about attempting to do the daily household chores that Susan always cheerfully attends to. When darkness is falling, she has not roused. He retires to bed, hoping against hope that she just needs to sleep it off. But when he wakes up, the house is still. Susan always gets up before he does, to make breakfast. Except... except yesterday. Days pass, and Susan does not even shift position. Charlie becomes more and more distraught with each passing hour. He supposes that this is one way to make sure she stays with him always, but he never wanted it to be like this.
