It was what Riella had been working on mastering when the knight--Gavin, she'd learned his name was--had shown up, and no fewer than two dozen potions had been administered to the poor young man in the four days since he'd woken up. He'd taken on beaks, wings, trunks, horns, antlers, fur, feathers, scales, tails, hooves, claws, and paws of all kinds. Because of the potion of docility and complacence, he'd taken all these outrageous and alarming changes in stride, leaving Fred to take the brunt of the shock. While her "mother" slept, though, she was preparing potions to try to reverse these effects--fortunately a lot simpler than reversing the potion of docility--so as soon as Wenda left for the marketplace, Fred was able to bring Gavin back at least to a half-human state. He now appeared as a creature like a centaur, but with the body of a lion rather than a horse, and the diet and certain behavioral patterns of a pig. His nose also bore a definite resemblance to a snout, and he was rather prone to snorting. It was as good as it was going to get. Fred had to get out of there. With Gavin's help on her instruction, she packed some necessities, including potion ingredients that might help her further restore Gavin, and smashed what else remained in the cottage. They set out less than an hour later, hopefully for the last time. She wished she could just idly talk to him, try to get him back to his old self, but he would need to be looking at her for that, and it wasn't worth how much it would slow them down.
