Woken by a Noise

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 110257

Up in the hayloft Astra could not at first tell if it was morning yet, as the hayloft had no window, but she did not feel that she had slept for very long. Then she saw that the opening down to the ground floor of the barn was showing a little light. From its colour, it looked as if it was the light of a lamp rather than daylight coming in through the barn's main door. She hoped that whoever was working down there by the light of the lamp was being careful. If a stray spark should cause the barn to catch fire, the hayloft would be a very bad place to be.

She crawled over to the opening, knowing that whoever was working below was unlikely to see her even should they happen to look up. Looking down:

  1. She saw that the man down below was Henry. He must have thought - incorrectly - that he could work quietly enough not to disturb her. She wondered why he needed to work in the barn at such a late hour.
  2. It was a stranger. He wasn't exactly working. He had taken a horse from a stall and was fitting it with a bridle and saddle. As it was dead of night, it seemed likely that he was stealing it.
  3. It was a woman. She was leading a horse into a stall. This must be Henry's wife, returned home, Astra assumed.
