Astra did not understand what had happened, but she assumed that she had
been
the victim of some strange sorcery. It did not occur to her that she
might be in
a different universe - indeed her background was such that she wouldn't
have understood the concept of multiple
universes. She thought that she must be in some unknown land far from her
own. At least
she had got a suit of good quality battle armour out of it.
Astra decided to follow the river downstream. As it grew larger (and it was already some twenty metres wide), there would be an increasing chance that it would be used for trade and that she would come to a town. Even if that didn't happen, the river must eventually reach the sea, and surely then she would find a settlement. The presence of a signpost showed that this region must have some inhabitants. The signpost bothered her, though. It wasn't just a question of the language. After all, place-names tended to be more or less decipherable whatever the language. The problem was that the letters in which the names were written were unfamiliar to her. That suggested that she was very far away from home indeed, for Aqualaria, Allaria and every other country that she knew of shared a common alphabet. When she eventually encountered the people of this land, it seemed unlikely that there would be a common language in which she could converse with them. Oh, well. It was no use worrying about it, she thought. She turned away from the signpost and started to follow the river. After a while:
