Fantastic creatures were in style that year, so the magician changed the remaining statues accordingly. The young couple became a mother unicorn standing over her foal, the softness of their manes coming through clearly even in stone. From the gangly teen, he fashioned a frolicking wood nymph caught just finishing a graceful leap with one foot still lifted high behind her. Having greater mass, the remaining old gentleman provided enough material to give the resulting phoenix a lovely tree as a perch as it fiercely surveyed all passersby.

When he got to Belboz, he thought it would be a shame to waste her beauty. So, he simply made her hair longer as he merged her legs into a mermaid’s tail. Once he had redressed her in the essential seashell top, he positioned her lying languidly on her side, one hand lifted to shade her eyes as she calmly viewed the horizon.

The merchant was thrilled at the magician’s work and bumped up the price accordingly. Nonetheless, the collection was swiftly snatched up by eager buyers and given honored places in rich homes. As for the mermaid, she ended up…
