Audacious Inkeeper

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 109541

The innkeeper was certainly a dreamer, but he gave it some time before making a move. The legend said that a mermaid could walk on land once per year, for no more than three days. Melody, when asked, said that she could stay for only three days. Not to mention there was definitely something strange about her--the way she spoke, the way she carried herself. It was awkward, like she wasn't used to walking. Her hair looked damaged, as if it had been submerged in saltwater for most of its existence. And when he looked closely enough, he was sure he saw some webbing between her fingers. Not to mention he was sure he'd heard someone mention a mermaid called Melody before... Could it have been Fred? Could he have encountered her once? Might that be the reason he'd come to them in the first place all those years ago?

That night, he entered her room without knocking--something he never did. She was lying on top of her covers, but sat up when he came in. "Bit rude to come in unannounced," she said, pouting, but her eyes were shining with mischief.

In response, he locked the door behind him, turned to her, and said, "All right, mercreature, why are you here? What do you want?"

She blinked innocently. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean."

"You certainly do. Why are you so interested in Old Man Fred? Do you know him? Did you have something to do with him ending up here?"

A grin curved Melody's mouth. "Maybe."

He put his hand against the door. "I have you trapped. That means you have to grant me three wishes."

In response, Melody...

  1. began singing.
  2. shrugged. He was right; she owed him wishes if she wanted freedom. "Your wish is my command."
