Fred had no more options. No more choices. The long road had led him here, to the bitter, bitter end. As many times as he had thought about this moment throughout the days and weeks that had passed, he had hoped that it would never come. But, at last, here he was. At the end. He reached into his satchel, removing a small box. The box was mostly wood, but it also had several small, copper tubes and three switches. He flipped up the first switch. "Goodbye sister. I wish I could have done more to save you... from the fate that must come." At the last second, he flipped the two remaining switches. It seemed as if time itself had stopped. Memories of his childhood flashed before his eyes. Scenes of the village where he grew up, his training as a knight, the quest... in the distance, he saw a butterfly, gently rising into the sky... he smiled. And then, the world was nothing but light and fire.
