The two of them swayed. In addition to Belboz's robe and hat, his staff had transformed into a hoe, which he dropped in general surprise at the whole thing. His spell to induce magical hypnosis had gone horribly wrong; instead of merely being an illusion in Winthrop's mind, the girl-into-chicken scenario had become reality—along with whatever details Winthrop's mind would have conjured up to fill in the vast blank spaces. Which appeared to include casting Belboz as the owner of the farm.
They were standing at the edge of a relatively small garden, though Belboz saw that grain fields stretched around them as far as the eye could see. Near them was a run-down barn, and Belboz could hear a multitude of animals inside. And not far away from that was a farmhouse that looked like it was barely holding itself together.
