The Never Ending Quest - Episode 108638

The young man squats down to Pruvyre's level, hands out in a nonthreatening position. "It's okay, old girl. My name's Hansel. I could use magic to make you trust me, just like your old master did, but I don't believe in that stuff. It's not right. But I promise I won't hurt you. You're safe now; my friends and I will take good care of you."

Pruvyre stares at him, uncertain.

He waves his hand, and a piece of fresh meat appears in the air and drops a few inches to the floor. Pruvyre looks at it longingly, but returns her gaze to Hansel.

The young man backs out of the room with a smile, and shuts the door.

Pruvyre eats with relish, and in the following days finds she very much likes Hansel. A few other visitors start to appear—two men, a woman, and a preteen girl, all wearing similar robes. They all treat her with kindness, though Hansel remains her favorite.

Often she can hear the sound of many footsteps and voices. She doesn't realize that these are the re-humanized versions of her former companions. Of course, a decent number of Xanven's pets had actually been dogs from birth—including the two litters Pruvyre had had with Tito—but the wizards had sold all of them to kind owners once picking them out. They kept Pruvyre only because of her age—and maybe just a bit of dumb luck.

"It's taking a while, but more are leaving every day," says Hansel one day as he pets her while she dozes. "They're remembering who they are, where they came from, and going back to their families. It must have been weird being around 90% dogs who weren't actually dogs, huh?" His tone darkens. "Not that there would have been any discernible difference."

The dog looks up at him.

"Don't worry about it, Lulie," Hansel says, using the name he and his friends have taken to calling her. "You're in good hands now."

In a few weeks the group of sorcerers achieves with kindness what Xanven did in the same time using mind manipulation—earning her complete trust. It becomes clear that they intend to keep taking care of her, and Lulie is just fine with that.

  1. They don't let her out of the room until all the restored people have gone.
  2. A few of the people who, for whatever reason, can't return home, end up staying indefinitely.
  3. They let Lulie out when they are still hosting a fair number of people, and one of them is Zenobia. "Cordana!" she cries on seeing her.
  4. One day Lulie wanders out of her room to find that her new family is nowhere to be found, but there are five new fellow canines. Zenobia sits in the kitchen, drinking tea.
