The goal of this spell was not to destroy Winthrop and replace him with someone else, as he had destroyed Fred and replaced him with Winthrop. No, all he needed was to suppress Winthrop's memories for a while; let him fill the holes himself, and of course, never suspect a thing. His mental faculties, mainly those of perception, would be dulled, as with the average hypnotic state—though in most ways, this would be very far from the average hypnotic state. He would not see his surroundings for what they were. And this state would last as long as Belboz allowed it to—the boy couldn't be simply shaken out of it. Belboz instructed his slave to sit down, and he did. He then said, "Close your eyes as I count backwards from ten," and again Winthrop obeyed. As Belboz slowly counted, waving his hands in fluid motions as he channeled the magic, Winthrop's posture became less and less rigid. Finally, Belboz said, "Zero." A pause. "Open your eyes." The boy's eyes blinked open.
