Astra has heard legends about harpies, beings who appear to be beautiful women except that they have great wings of black feathers in addition to their arms, as well as bird-like feet. Astra has never believed in their existence, and she is doubly surprised to find a city of them underground, which doesn't seem like the natural environment for creatures that can fly. But she reflects that this cavern is so enormous that there is plenty of room for them to spread their wings here.
Indeed it is the many who are currently in the air that she spots first. Their wingspan is impressive, but she supposes that it needs to be to be able to lift their body-weight. Their black wings and hair are in sharp contrast to their very pale skin with not a hint of a tan, which suggests that they rarely if ever venture into the open air. Most of that skin is on view, as none wears more than a loincloth, perhaps because anything more would make flying more difficult. Some are carrying spears, and appear to be herding a group of a half a dozen captive goblins along one of the roads that lead towards the heart of the city. Astra wonders if their fate is to be slaves or - even worse - food. Such a large city must take a lot of feeding, and it's hard to see how the cave system could provide enough sustenance for so many. There surely can't be that many goblins and, even supposing that there are, what do they live on? Since all the harpies appear to be female, Astra also wonders how they reproduce.
