Astra has been deafened by Fred's shouting. All she can hear is a rumble when he speaks, but she cannot make out any words. As for the red dragon, Astra can see its mouth move when she peers over Fred's tail to see what is going on, but can hear nothing. Unfortunately her skills as a lip reader are lacking, but she can sense that things are not going well. Then she sees the female dragon gesture with her forepaw, and feels a tingling in her skin. (The spell can't be cast precisely enough for Astra not to detect the magical energies building up in the cave.)
Realising that the fire dragon is casting a spell, Astra fears the worst. Perhaps unwisely, she intervenes. She dashes round in front of Fred. her hand outstretched. "Stop!" she yells, though she can't hear even herself. "Well, well, if it isn't the princess," the red dragon says. Her attention having been fixed on Fred, she hadn't noticed Astra till now. "How did you manage to escape? Well, that won't happen again." Astra can't answer the question that she has been asked, not having heard it. Instead all she can say is: "Whatever Fred has told you is true." Of course, she has no idea what he has actually said.
