Fred could not see the prisoner's head, hidden as it was under the black hood. But he still had no difficulty in identifying the person as female, since she was wearing only what he assumed must be her underwear: a vest and knickers that might once have been white but now were grey with dirt. Her hands were tied together behind her back. She was tall and athletic-looking, in spite of being quite busty, and - unlike her swarthy captors - her skin was pale, suggesting that she was not of their tribe but was an outsider.
As a knight of Allaria, Fred's code of chivalry required him to render aid to any damsel in distress that he might encounter. This woman clearly qualified, since it looked as though she was about to be ritually sacrificed. But how was he to rescue her? He was outnumbered by seven to one, disregarding any other members of the tribe who might be out of sight. He still wore his chain mail, in spite of it being uncomfoertably hot in these conditions, and he had his sword. So he was better protected and better armed than his opponents, some of whom had knives tucked into their belts but otherwise appeared to be weaponless. So that was something in his favour.
