Belboz had a friend called Salmar. Salmar was not the sharpest sorcerer around, but unfortunately he was also the heir to the fortune of his father, a much greater sorcerer who had been collecting rare magical items all his life. Salmar's father had died two years before. Salmar had many things coveted by wizards all around, but one particular thing, one of the rarest in his collection, was necessary for Belboz's spell. Salmar had made a terrible mistake. While visiting the ruler of a small kingdom near Aqualaria, he had caused one of the youngest princesses to disappear into thin air. The king was both furious and distraught, but gave him a few weeks to figure out how to return his daughter to him before he threw him into the dungeon. Salmar had called in Belboz, who had realized with horror that he had not, in fact, sent the girl to another place--he had transformed her into fog and dissipated her. The process of gathering her back up would take years even for a sorcerer as skilled as Belboz. It would be possible, but she was particles all over the kingdom and beyond now. And when she returned, there was no guarantee she would be the same. So Salmar had pleaded with Belboz to help him cover up his mistake. Initially Belboz had refused. But after realizing his kingdom's safety was at stake, and that Salmar would not lend him the item he needed until Belboz helped him... Well, that was when Sir Fred came into the picture. It was nothing personal. Belboz had come to this realization the very same morning. Fred was the first person to come along. There was no time to waste. Belboz comforted himself with the thought that the former knight would at least live a comfortable life. The king had eleven daughters ranging from the age of two to twenty-one. The three eldest were married but still kept in touch. It was a happy family. He tried not to think about the time when the team of sorcerers Salmar was currently assembling finally did manage to restore the original princess, and how utterly out of reach the original Fred would be by that time, and what would become of her then... He fixed up Hannah--for that was the name of the lost princess--giving her a much nicer pink gown and a darling golden circlet in her hair. She giggled as the magic swirling around her tickled her. And Belboz laid his hand on her shoulder.
