All little girls of this age were basically the same, Belboz reasoned. They liked kittens and unicorns and the color pink. And they were very stupid, very gullible, and very susceptible to suggestion. Fred's old personality wore away under Belboz's palms. His thinking became simplistic. His morals became underdeveloped. His awareness became duller. His interests became feminine. Belboz lifted his hands and rubbed them together, satisfied. The little girl before him let out a giggle, apparently for no reason, and then looked very alarmed. "What did you do to me?" she asked, bewildered and afraid. "Listen, little girl," Belboz said, crouching down. "I am about to hand you back to your mother. If you answer to the name Hannah, if you assimilate back into your home, if you tell them you had a lovely time at Belboz's, if you smile and enjoy all life has to offer you, your mother will give you cookies and read you bedtime stories and love you unconditionally, and your father will take you out fishing and spoil you rotten and protect you from all the bad in the world." Fred was smiling in spite of herself. "You know what will happen if you tell them you are a knight trapped in a little girl's body?" Fred's eyes widened. "They will take you to a doctor and they will miss the way you used to be and your Mummy will cry and your Daddy will try to comfort her and your family will fall apart."
Tears trembled in Fred's eyes. "It's your choice." Belboz placed a hand on the little girl's shoulder and smiled.
