Escape

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 107908

Winthrop had been wanting to escape for some time now. For a long while he had been content enough, but just after he had found out he was twelve (because he had no notion of birthdays and had never even known how old he was before then—Belboz had just happened to mention his age one day) he began to wonder if there was more to life than this. It was not long before he decided there must be. And shortly after that, he resolved to find it for himself.

He had no means of contact with the outside world, but he also was often unsupervised. He felt extremely uncomfortable and afraid at the prospect of just beginning to walk, with no plan whatsoever. But what else could he do?

When he stepped outside, though it was a warm and sunny day, he got an immediate shiver (which always seemed to happen when he went outside without Belboz's knowledge). Shrugging it off, he stared into the wide open hills before him and began his trek down the face of the mountain.

  1. He began to feel very sick in a matter of ten or so minutes, and after vomiting twice he decided today may not be the best day to escape, and turned back.
  2. He began to feel very sick in a matter of ten or so minutes, and found a thick grove in which he curled up and fell asleep.
  3. He had not passed from the sight of the tunnel's exit before a terrifying voice behind him bellowed, "Did I give you permission to leave, boy?"
  4. He was inexplicably and completely exhausted by the time he reached the bottom. By a bizarre stroke of fortune, there was a caravan there—a traveling group of minstrels who agreed to give him a lift.
