Normally Belboz, a very old, skilled, and experienced sorcerer, could clean his potions room without incident. He did a thorough and complete cleaning every few years. But accidents could happen, no matter how careful you were. It was very unwise to use magic to clean up magical residue, as they could mix in unpredictable and often dangerous ways, so it had to be done the old-fashioned way. Two cleanings before his acquisition of Winthrop, he had come out of it with blue skin, advancing from his hands to affect the rest of his body. After about an hour he realized he was also developing soft azure fuzz all over his body. It had taken a week to locate the source of the problem and reverse it. Another time, several decades before, he'd uncovered a cursed object in the depths of his shelf that he'd forgotten he owned, and one look at it cost him about five years' worth of memories that he'd never gotten back. Now, he had no needless cruelty in mind for Winthrop. He would supply him with the proper materials to protect his skin, explain the cleaning process in intricate detail, and supervise at least the beginning. But he had no intention of cleaning that room himself ever again. Besides being potentially dangerous, it was long, and very tedious. Winthrop seemed grimly accepting of this task, and he appeared to understand its dangers.
