Settling Down with a Good Book

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 106986

By some oversight Josh had never read H. G. Wells' "The Time Machine", and he felt that it was high time that he rectified that, especially as the blurb on the back cover claimed that it was arguably the most influential SF story ever written. Taking the book back to the Staircase Room, he began to read.

  1. A few hours later he has finished it, his only complaint being that the story was too short.
  2. Since he suffers from ADD, he soon tosses the book aside.
  3. A time machine seemingly identical to the one described in the book materialises in the Staircase Room.
  4. He gets the chills at the descripton towards the end of the book of the dying Earth in the far future, even though he knows that modern science has shown that the Earth will eventually perish from heat rather than cold.

JH (I think those few pages towards the end of the Time Machine are still the most memorable in all of SF)
