Fred found that having regained possession of his sword wasn't much help in the melee, as he was unwilling to use it against the insane princess (or against Velus or the old man, for that matter). On the other hand, at least it meant that Astra could not use it against him. And his armour meant that he couldn't come to much harm, as Astra trying to punch him just resulted in her bruising her fist.

Not surprisingly, the old man was getting the worst of it, being less fit and agile than the others. At least he was getting the worst of it until he could complete a defensive spell that put them all to sleep for eight hours.

Yes, all. Even the old man himself, which might be seen as something of a flaw in the spell. When they eventually come round they find that someone has stolen Fred's armour and sword.
With the other three asleep, the old man leaves.
With the other three asleep, the old man attempts to remove the insanity spell that he realises the princess is under.
