Since the Amazons were heading back home, and thus travelling in the opposite direction to the royal palace back in Caemlyn, Exotica intended to leave them at the first town they came to. Then she could see about making arrangements to return home. But there was an unexpected problem. When they reached the spot where the town should have been, they found instead a grove of ancient trees.
"But this is impossible!" Exotica protested. "Are you sure that you're reading the map correctly?" Anagrippa scowled at her. "Of course," she said. "There is no possibility of error. The town should be here. In fact it was here as recently as a few weeks ago, when we passed through it on our outward journey. Yet these trees look as if they are hundreds of years old. Very powerful magic must be at work, for what purpose I cannot guess. We should move on with all possible speed, lest we fall foul of it." Exotica wondered if the dragon could be responsible.
