Going Up?

This was no longer the chest room. All the chests, except for the gold one he had stepped out of, were gone. There was no longer a corridor leading to where he had been or ahead. The room was now a round room whose walls and floor were covered by mosaics. In the center was a spiral staircase that lead up.

Fred sighed, wondering wether this quest would ever be straightforward. He'd thought that he'd just go to the Dragons' lair and kill the beast, but instead he'd been through false maps and false chests with ladders that lead down, and then there had been the rumors of were- things and dragons at war, and now this... At any rate, there was only one thing to do, and that was to

1. Fred decides to go up the staircase.
2. Fred decides to go down the ladder. (With no idea whether this will be the same place he just left.)
3. Fred decides to examine the mosaics.
4. Fred sees a man hanging down from the stairway by a shoelace.
