"What? Aren't you supposed to be a noble knight, sworn to help those in need?"

"I'm a knight who wants lots of loot and the fame and glory that comes with killing the dragon."

"If money is what motivates you, then I should mention that I'm the daughter of a very rich noble, who will reward you handsomely if you bring me safely back home."

"What! Well why didn't you say so earlier? Here goes!" With that he brought his sword down on the chain.

1. The sword cut through it easily, freeing the maiden and giving Fred access to the chest's contents.
2. The sword cut through it but was pretty much a write-off.
3. The sword bounced off the chain within having any visible effect.
