Exotica was reluctant to step onto the ramp. "I've no head for heights," she said. "Close your eyes and hold onto my arm, and I'll guide you," suggested Fred. So Exotica bravely did so, gritting her teeth.

The three figures had initially been too far away for Fred to make out any details, but as he approached them he realised that at least two of them looked very familiar. Then he was distracted, as Velus accidentally got under Exotica's feet, and she tripped over him.

  1. Fortunately, she recovered her footing.
  2. Letting go of Fred's arm as she fell sideways, she plunged into the abyss.
  3. Keeping tight hold of Fred's arm as she fell, she pulled him off the ramp with her.
