Annabella was horrified to see that she had become an old crone. Her joints ached, her skin sagged, and her eyes were not the best. She guessed that she was now as old as her betrothed appeared to be, which was about sixty. Belboz seemed pleased at this, but Annabella could only stare at her now-withered hands in horror. Or at least, that was so for a few seconds, until her alarm and disgust and fear all melted away into nothingness, and she felt, on the whole, rather mellow and unaffected by the whole business (this change of heart taking place after another subtle wave from Belboz which she had failed to notice). "Very well, my dear Belboz," she said in her new old lady voice. "I have no complaint anymore." They were married, and none in the congregation seemed to notice that the bride had aged by about forty years in the space of two minutes. Annabella felt pleased by it all in a sort of detached way.
