What Hannah didn't know, but would observe the effects of in a matter of moments, was that Belboz had affected Joseph in a similar way. She stared into his eyes, suddenly wanting never to look away. He stared right back into hers, and without warning, took her into his arms and kissed her passionately. The participation was mutual. They drew away from each other after an uncomfortable amount of time for Belboz, and he chuckled. "Well," he said. "I suppose I was right." Their romance went by in a whirlwind. After one month they were engaged. After another week they were wed. And one month later, they were expecting a little one. Now, Fred was still inside Hannah. By this point he was rather traumatized. He experienced everything Hannah did—saw what she saw, felt what she felt. There was no blocking any of it out. Belboz had told him that Hannah would become a wife and mother (and do nothing that was not utterly girly). He'd tried to flee. But now it was coming to pass.
