"Let us be as sisters," the maiden calling herself Priscilla (formerly Belboz) said with a smile.
"Yes, lets," Marguerite (formerly Frederica and before that Fred) agreed enthusiastically. She went on: "I hope that at least one of us has some money, as we are going to need to pay for this room unless we paid in advance." But a thorough search of the room failed to reveal any money, or even any belongings other than the clothes that they were wearing. "How very odd," Priscilla remarked. Before Marguerite could reply, the door opened and a chambermaid walked in. "Oh, I'm so sorry to intrude," she said to the two "sisters". "I wasn't told that this room had been taken." "In that case perhaps it hasn't been and we shouldn't be here," Marguerite said. "You see, strange as it may sound, the two of us found ourselves here just now with no memory of our lives up to that point. Perhaps we ought to speak to the landlord, and see if this is our room." "Perhaps you've been the victims of some magic spell of forgetfulness?" the maid shrewdly suggested. "I'd better take you to see the landlord. He will know if you are supposed to be staying here." Naturally the landlord had no knowledge of them. "Since you say that you have no money, I have a suggestion for you," he said. "You are very attractive girls, so I would be happy to take you both on as barmaids. I won't pretend that your wages would be very large, but at least you would get a bedroom to share and all your meals provided. And I'm sure that we could find some more fitting clothes for Priscilla. Hmm... the names that you've chosen won't do for barmaids; they sound far too grand. I hope that you'd be happy to be known as Cilla and Marge."
