Red is the color of passion, after all. It's an innocent sort of love, though—he knows that if he is to be happy he will marry her one day, and the only thought in his mind is of taking care of her. He leaves the pool, but not before feeding her some of the water—she has to drink something, after all. Fortune smiles upon him, and he comes across an area frequented by small animals, and filled with lush foliage—magical foliage, it seems, to be able to grow underground with no sunlight or soil. Also the fact that when he and Diana eat some of it their teeth turn sharp and they grow furry tails might indicate there is magic about. They stay there for a long time. Fred gives everything he has to take care of Diana. His mind reverts to that of a four-year-old before long, so he has to grow up all over again, but so does Diana. After eighteen years, Fred finally allows himself to tell Diana that he loves her, and she immediately confesses that she feels the same way. Life is pure bliss for some time. Then...
