The relationship between the two men is clearly that of an apprentice and his mentor. Pruvyre somehow doubts that the other two heads realize this, however. She figures very early on that she is more intelligent than they. After about a week, she gets her head around the fact that she was once human. And after a few months, she finally remembers what it was like. "Separating you is going to be very difficult," the mentor says one day. "I want you to know that it could very well kill you." "I don't care," Pruvyre says. "I can't go on living like this." The heads next to her have barely figured out how to speak. Dealing with them still acting like dogs has nearly driven her mad. "I bet Zenobia would know," the apprentice says, sounding mischievous. "Never again," the mentor responds immediately. The name stirs something in Pruvyre. "Zenobia..." she murmurs. "Who is Zenobia?" "She's nobody. A witch. I used to know her." The mentor pauses. "Why?" "I... I can't remember..." Pruvyre has intense feelings, both positive and negative, regarding this name, and it's very confusing. The apprentice blinks. "Master, what if Zenobia had something to do with how she got this way?" It takes a ridiculous amount of convincing, but the mentor finally reluctantly agrees that they should go and ask her. They take the three-headed woman with them. Zenobia's reaction on seeing the woman is just to laugh, and she doesn't seem to recognize any of the heads. But after hearing the two magic-makers' story, she exclaims, "That's my dog!"
