Fred turned around (which took a while in this wide, unfamiliar body), still furious and now humiliated on top of that. Zenobia laughed. "You may find that toads are not the most effective fighters." And she turned back to Diana, who was by now pressed against the wall in fear. "Do not be afraid, my dear!" the witch said, approaching her with a sickly sweet smile. "Let me make you a deal." She waited. "What is it?" Diana asked cautiously after several seconds. "You care for this man—well, toad. Yes?" Diana gave a tiny nod. "If you do something for me, I will spare his life." "What is it?" Diana asked again, stronger this time, even while the now-calmer Fred gestured wildly with his webbed hands. "Oh, it's nothing much, really, nothing you'd miss." The witch took an agonizing pause. "You see, there comes a point in every witch's life when her body begins to succumb to time, and she has to go through far more trouble than she'd like to stay young and beautiful. I have surpassed this point. Now, I am rather fond of my body, and yours looks just like it... Not to mention yours is not a witch's body. Resign your body to me, and I refrain from stepping on this toad right now. That is my deal." Fred hopped towards Diana in a panic, trying to convey with little toady gestures the message No, don't do it! To his dismay, neither of them even looked down at him. Diana bit her lip, and said, "You have to swear you won't hurt him." "I swear it," the witch said, extending her hand. "Not a hair on his little amphibious head will be harmed." Diana looked at the hand dubiously. "Nor the rest of him," Zenobia amended, rolling her eyes. "And swear that you'll turn him back into a human and let him go," Diana said firmly. The witch's eyes flashed, but she conceded, "Fine. He'll be allowed to leave immediately, in human form. And you will allow me to enter your body." Fred watched, eyes wide with horror, as Diana grasped the witch's still-extended hand. Zenobia promptly collapsed, and Diana straightened up, lips curving into a wicked smile. She waved a hand, and Fred found himself sprawled on the floor, in human form but stark naked. He sprang to his feet, and after a moment of dizziness said:
