Though the treasure is beautiful, Fred knows it must have been stolen and thus is not his to take. Besides, he's quite ready to be rid of this place. He simply wants to be home again and away from this dark place. The king is good and just enough to properly reward him, and Fred thought it would be enough for him to never return to this place. He leaves the treasure chamber and closes the door behind him. He walks right down the tunnel without looking back. To his relief, the tunnel leads directly outside and back to his own dear land. He makes it back to the king without incident and proclaims the dragon's death. The citizens praise him as a hero and the king makes him a duke of his own beautiful and prosperous province (with more than his fair share of the dragon treasure), and Fred lives happily ever after.
