Hey, he had earned it, hadn't he? He alone had braved the doom and danger, and had defeated the dragon. He deserves this treasure, regardless of where it came from or from whom the dragon had stolen it. He pushes away all whispers of his conscience.
Grabbing as much as his hands can hold, he stuffs his pockets and then his pack. Finally he grabs an arm bracelet and shoves it up him arm to his bicep. Grudgingly admitting that's all he can carry, he turns and heads back out. Suddenly he starts to feel funny. He feels a burning sensation inside just like after he's eaten his grandmother's chili. He tries to stagger on, but he falls to the floor and stiffens with discomfort as spasms course through his back. The pain increases until finally he feels like someone snaps him in twain. Everything goes black. Groaning, he opens his eyes and sees the scaly arms and shining claws. He feels the fire burning inside. He's the dragon now. He licks his lips as he thinks of all the livestock and peasants in the valley just waiting to be eaten. He's reluctant to leave his treasure unguarded, but his stomach is withered from hunger. He struts out and closes the bronze gate behind him. Now he is doomed to terrorize the kingdom and live alone in the cave until a brave knight as he once was comes along and slays him. 'And may he have the purity of heart to avoid my fate,' the last of Fred thinks before he finally fades into the devouring 'it' of the dragon.
