Fred races for the nearby tunnel, hoping to get away before the dragon can get him. The dragon lets loose a hail of fire just as he runs through the entrance, and he can feel the heat on the back of his legs; his clothing is a bit singed. He runs down the tunnel until he's out of range and then stops for breath.
The choices before him are clear: continue running or go back to face the dragon. Obviously, he doesn't want to face the dragon, but that is his quest, and he doesn't see the point of returning without having accomplished it.
