The Cabin

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 10140

Fred's stomach is growling; it has been a while since he has eaten. He sees an island in the lake, where he can see a couple of deer nibbling on some grass. A swim of about an hour should allow him to reach the island. Fred thinks about a quick dive underwater, as there could be some shellfish there. Fortunately, Fred swims well. He often swam in East Suffex Lake as a relief from hunting expeditions during the summer while he was a squire. Fred strips to his breeches, and jumps in the lake. Fred shivers uncontrollably in the ice-cold waters of the lake. Fred jumps out of the lake.

"It looks like I am going to be here for a while," thought Fred, rubbing himself in order to bring back some feeling in his limbs. "The melt from the snow in those mountains must feed the lake." Fred does not want to try hiking in the forest, as the sun is low in the sky, and darkness will set in within an hour or two. He will have to sleep in the open, under the stars. Camping in the open is a part of training for any knight of Suffex, although a tent or shelter be welcome to a cold Fred. Fred left any such equipment with his horse back in the village, not expecting his quest to take him out of the caverns, or to last long.

A log cabin in the woods catches Fred's attention. It is not far off, he can certainly make it there before dusk. There are no signs of life, such as smoke from a fire. After hacking his way through brambles with his sword, Fred reaches the cabin. Opening the door, he finds it to be a sparsely furnished log cabin, with just a table, a fireplace, an iron kettle, and no windows. There is a pile of hay in a corner, which promises to provide a pleasant rest for tonight. There does not seem to be any food, however.

Fred does notice one unusual item.

  1. There is a red quarto on the table.
  2. A small red ruby
