There was nothing in the landscape around them. It was as desolate and flat as ever. But in
the grey sky above them, something golden and shimmering could be seen flying toward
them with the swiftness of a hawk. "I don't know," said Princess Astra. "I have never seen
the like of it before in my life."
"I have heard of such things before," said Fred. "We must be in the Frozen Wastes of the North, because that can only be a Valinar ship. This means that there is a chance that we are safe." "Who are these Valinar?" asked Astra. "They are nomads who live in airships, only landing on the earth to hunt for food," said Exotica. "Their culture is disorganized and primitive in some ways, but they are almost all literate and possess magic that other lands know nothing of. Some believe them to be descendants of neutral mages who fled the Great Empire of Tetrilonia during the MageWars. My people have had dealings with them--one of their chieftans aided us in our war against Hespan, but others have raided the northern Great Kingdom." The ship swooped down toward them. "I think they've noticed us," said Exotica.
