"Mrs. Lomax, I'll take your case. There'll be a fee, of course..."
"Oh thank you, mister Knight, thank you! I'll pay you whatever you want, just please find my husband!" Carol Lomax seemed very grateful, almost to the point of kissing me. I got up from my chair and started to walk around the room to avoid any such unpleasant business, since she was, as has been previously noted, quite repulsive. In fact, I was starting to suspect that Mr. Lomax might have actually ran away from this ghastly woman. But I didn't mention the idea to Mrs. Lomax. Instead I asked her the usual questions, when and where did she last see her husband, had he been acting unusually recently, and so on. Finally (and with great relief) I showed her to the door and made sure that she didn't try to return to my office. Good grief, she was ugly. But hey, at least she was willing to pay me, unlike some previous clients I'd had (and sadly, when your clients are werewolves, vampires and the like, it's kind of hard to demand payment). Apparently Mr. Lomax was last seen by Mrs. Lomax in this very neighborhood, heading towards the somewhat disreputable bar right across the street from the building I was currently in. This gave me an excellent opportunity to have a few glasses of my own during my work. I decided to go to the bar, and talk to one of my old contacts.
