Re: 2021 Resolution
I'll actually resolve the torch situation if I extend the story.
Magic and supernatural forces have always been such a convenient tool when explaining discrepancies in NEQ.
And actually - I think I WAS and probably AM way too OCD when it comes to thread "consistency"
As if there's this tribunal waiting to punish all those who stray from the HOLY AND SACRED text of the prior episodes.
Well - I've yet to start on the aforementioned extension. But I'm wasting plenty of time rambling on here. Im a rambling man.
What can I say? I ramble. I am the RAMBO of rambling.
*rambles on*

Re: 2021 Resolution
I'm OCD about consistency too, but I regard it as a Good Thing. As a reader, nothing shatters my suspension of disbelief more than spotting a major inconsistency. (But as a writer, thinking of creative ways to explain away an apparent inconsistency can be great fun.)

Re: 2021 Resolution
No problems, Ib. I found a substitute for a torch. We would not want Fred to be eaten by a grue. (Zork reference, in case you are too young to remember text-based adventure games.)
In 117885 it did not state that he threw away Belboz's receipt for the flamebane mail. So I figure that use of the receipt is allowed. I know that Fred probably did use both hands when he tried to pry the torch from the wall, so I did not think that the note would not necessarily be in his hands. I think that had at least two places to store the note if he wanted to. One would be with his map (if he still has it). The other would be up a sleeve. The note is unusual enough where Fred might have decided to keep it without having a definite reason to do so.

Re: 2021 Resolution
I'd envisaged Fred having a pack or bag of some sort. When entering the caves, I'd imagine he'd want to being some food and drink with him, knowing that he could be in there for some time.

Re: 2021 Resolution
I've always imagined the same, JH.
It always seemed silly, him galavanting into the caves in full armour.
But that's where the charm comes in. It's a silly story - so I never took it TOO seriously. A great story - but silly.
I'm not sure what you're talking about, Anableps. A "receipt"? I'll reread your post. And
....
Maybe I need to read your episode again. I've been busy the last few days.
I will continue adding to this thread...but bare with me here.
(Woohooo!!! TRUMPS GONE!!!!!)
ahem.
Sorry.

It just hit me.
Duh.
The receipt.
Sorry, Anableps.
I've always been a little slow on the...uptick? Uptake?
I'm slow

Re: 2021 Resolution
I'm afraid I couldn't resist writing another episode, even though arguably it was your turn.

Rubbish. It's a jungle.
No "turns"
First come, first serve.
And I was obviously slacking.

Re: 2021 Resolution
I have written five of my ten episodes and it is only February.
I think that there are good possibilities in this thread. Fred could be in combat with the dragon in the next episode or two and a decisive result would not end the story. There are two promising complications: the quest for the jar, and what to do about Belboz and Exotica. It could also go in a number of other interesting directions.
While I am waiting for the next episode, I will share one random idea. There is a stage magician prop is "flash paper." It is a nitrocellulose tissue paper that burns very quickly and leaves no residue. Real flash paper would not be a realistic prop to introduce into pseudo-historical fiction. Nitrocellulose couldn't be produced until the 1800s. But I think that it would be acceptable for a fantasy.
I can see Maggie being equipped with something like that. She does not appear to be a warrior type (scared of spiders, has the normal reaction to icy water), but she uses stealth maybe a little social engineering to accomplish her mission. The brigands confiscated her supplies, but did not find the needle - and even if they had, they might not have thought much about it, she just being an unremarkable woman. So in that situation, if she was given something like flash paper she could disguise the paper as lace ornament on her dress, pin it under her collar, or store it inside her underclothes. It could possibly be useful as a distraction in a fight or to frighten off monsters. Also the ignition of flash paper might temporarily blind an opponent.
It might not fit into the action of this particular story, but I thought I would share the idea to see if there were problems with it or possibilities that I haven't seen.

Re: 2021 Resolution
Interesting idea.
Ib, can we expect that episode from you in the near future, or should I go ahead and write something myself?
