A goldfish has an elongated body, with mostly a triangular tail, with 2 lobes springing out after the triangle. The colors vary from white to red, over yellow and orange. Black spots and marks can also occur. ------ end 136:1 ------ ----- begin 136:3 ----- I've always loved fish...they're the pets most easy to care for. They're not even really pets; they're more like furniture. But you still have to be careful sometimes. I always liked the Siamese fighting fish: their dangerously dagger-like form, their bold colors (neon blue is my favorite), their deliciously evil-sounding name. I had always though the name was just a name, though--until I put two of them in a tank together (one a bright cherry red and the other a more muted green-yellow motley). Suffice to say that in the aftermath I found out that some fish just don't get along with others of their kind. I certainly wouldn't want to see this round turn out that way. Therefore, future rules will not mention by name any fish which was mentioned by name in a previous rule. That ought to keep any fights from breaking out. ------ end 136:3 ------ ----- begin 136:4 ----- I am, as it happens, a fish. An antfish to be precise. We antfish are gold with green gills, and have a handy set of six stumpy limbs on our otherwise typically fishlike body. This unusual feature explains our name, and how I am able to type this rule. All varieties of fish have some unique feature that distinguishes them from the rest, which should be mentioned in any future description of them. Each of these features must also give rise to a new restriction on rules still to come. For example, my short arms do not allow me to use any of the symbols on the top row of my keyboard. ------ end 136:4 ------ ----- begin 136:6 ----- Once, when sailing on the ocean, I viewed a strange fish apearing beside the boat. He was long with a fat belly, and his jaw was almost as long as his dark gray body. It had many teeth set into it at the sides. The captain told me it was a sawfish. Odd enough, I received a message from him : At everything I look, I cut it into pieces with my jaw. This is handy for my meals, but not for my friends. /Future rules will/ use /at least three successive/ words that are cut out from another rule. Once cut, they can not be used again in that combination. It has to be visible where the cuts have happened by placing some sign before and after the words. This sign may, in the rule and the rules following it, only be used to mark the cut out words. ------ end 136:6 ------ ----- begin 136:8 ----- Did I ever mention I was good friends with Christopher Robin? Perhaps you've heard of him? /I received a message from him/ a few days ago, asking me to stop by his web site at "www.christopherrobin.com". He's a graphics designer now. I thought I'd drop by for tea and crumpets. I found him at his loft in the city, and we immediately set to talking, though I was disappointed with regards to the tea. In any case, conversation went from one subject to another, until finally he mentioned in an offhand manner that Milne had gotten it all wrong. "You see," Chris said, "All of my friends didn't live in the Hundred-Acre Woods, they lived in the Hundred Acre Pond." I was, to say the least, quite astonished, but Chris went right on without be responding. "I am reminded of this," he said, "because just the other day I was talking to Poohfish..." "Poohfish??" I asked incredulously. "Yes," he said, rather sharply. "My good friend Poohfish. He's a yellow sort of fish with little flabby fins, and looks a great deal like a stout bear, if that bear had fins and a tail instead of feet. In any case, he takes great pleasure in reading things, for I can hold a computer monitor right at the edge of the water so the pond so that he can see." "Ah," was all I could think of to say. "He delights in reading the FRC postings, you see," persisted Chris. "But I fear that he is none too bright and cannot understand a great deal of it. Just the other day, in fact, I was speaking with him: "'What does Crustimoney Proseedcake mean?" said Poohfish. "For I am a Fish of Very Little Brain, and long words Bother me.'" "I assume," I said, rather more dryly than was necessary, "that he did not come across those particular two words on the FRC postings." "Of course not," said Chris even more sharply than before. "They were from somewhere ELSE. But the fact is that Poohfish can't follow all the big words that you use. It's very sad." "Quite," I agreed. "Well, I'll tell you what. For the remainder of this round, no one will use any long words in any of their rules; that way, Poohfish can understand them, despite being a Fish of Very Little Brain." "But how long is a long word?" asked Chris, once again reminding me how very intelligent he really was. "A long word is a word with more than seven letters in it," I said definitively, already knowing the designation was somewhat arbitrary. "That seems rather arbitrary," said Chris. "I think the maximum ought to be six letters, for after all, Poohfish is a Fish of VERY Little Brain." "Indeed he is," said I. "So I'll tell you what. Scratch that about 'long words'; let's make this more clear. For the rest of this round, if a rule is posted on a weekday, then no word in it will be longer than six letters, but if it's posted on a weekend, then no word in it will be longer than seven letters. That should let Poohfish read it without too much Bother, right?" "Poohfish should be able to handle that," agreed Chris happily. "He likes to read it more on weekdays anyway." And with that settled, we turned to another subject. ------ end 136:8 ------ ----- begin 136:A ----- For the duration of Round 136 only, the R.O.'s shall be changed to the following text: Regular Ordinances of the Fish Replenishment Committee (FRC) 1. Ordinances. There shall be two types of ordinances: regular ordinances and fish. Fish shall have no effect on play except as provided for in the regular ordinances. 2. Membership. Any person may become a member of this committee by placing in the committee fishtank a statement of intent to join. A member may resign from the committee at any time. 3. Starting the Round and posting Fish. Round 136 shall truly start upon the passing of this overrule proposal. The fishtank shall initially consist of all those rules which were declared valid before the passing of this proposal, with the substitution "rule" --> "fish" made to their text. All members are eligible as if they had introduced a live fish at the beginning of the round. Only those persons eligible to play may introduce fish into to the tank. The Judge is not eligible. 4. Eligibility to play. Each live fish makes its author eligible to play. This eligibility period lasts for seven (7) days from the time of the fish's introduction minus one (1) day for each dead fish introduced by the same person after the live fish. If an initially live fish is later eaten this does not affect eligibility. 5. End of Game. If at any time after the seventh day of a round, there is only one person eligible to play, then (a) all the fish are removed from the tank (b) the round ends (c) the sole remaining player is declared winner of the just ended round and becomes Judge. 6. Judge. The Judge is responsible for interpreting the ordinances and determining the lives of the fish. If a fish is inconsistent with itself or the regular ordinances, it shall be declared dead or a red herring and shall be considered to have died of natural causes. If it is consistent with these but inconsistent with the other live fish, it shall be eaten by the fastest live fish which is inconsistent with it and has a larger size, or the same size and greater speed, than it does. In that case the introduced fish shall be declared dead or a red herring. If none of these situations arise, the fish shall be declared live, and shall eat all the live fish which are inconsistent with it, which shall then become dead. If the fish ever become inconsistent with each other later on, the same procedure shall be applied starting with the fish which were introduced latest and continuing back. However, eligibilities are never affected by the deaths of old fish. Size: A newly introduced fish has a size equal to 1 plus the number of full days which pass before its initial status is judged (more time to grow). If a fish eats another fish, the eaten fish's size is added to the size of the eating fish. Also, a fish shall increase in size by 1 for every week which passes after it was introduced. Speed: A fish with fewer characters of text is faster than one with more characters. If two fish have the same number of characters the one that was introduced first shall be the faster one. 6a. A fish can only be declared a red herring if the only fish or fishes that are capable of eating it (i.e. greater size or the same size but greater speed) are other fish for which it is reasonable to assume that the introducer of the fish had not seen them before e introduced the fish. If a fish is live for some time but later eaten, it may only be declared dead, not a red herring. 6b. Resignation. The Judge may resign if e appoints a successor who agrees to serve as Judge until the end of the round. [The new Judge becomes ineligible to play upon the old Judge's resignation.] 7. Style Points. For each fish introduced, the Judge shall award X points, where -3<=X<=3. The Judge may use any criteria e sees fit for such awards. At the end of a Round the Player who has collected the most Style Points will be the Wizard in the next Round. 8. Restrictions on Judge's Power. The decision of the Judge may be changed if a proposal is made to do so and that proposal receives a two-thirds affirmative vote of the members voting on that proposal within three (3) days after the posting of that proposal. Default. If the Judge does not declare judgment of a fish within three (3) days after its introduction, e shall be considered then to have decided and declared that fish live (the fish shall then have initial Size 4 since three days had passed). 9. Amendment. The regular ordinances may be amended if a proposal is posted to do so and said proposal receives a two-thirds (2/3) affirmative vote of the members voting on that proposal within seven (7) days after the posting of that proposal. Overrule. The regular ordinances may be overruled for a single round if a proposal is posted to do so and said proposal receives a two-thirds (2/3) affirmative vote of the members voting on that proposal within three (3) days after the posting of that proposal. 10. Where to Do Things. All actions under these rules must be accomplished by a public introduction into the official committee fishtank. The Judge may determine the location and nature of the official committee fishtank. ------ end 136:A ------ -- Ed Murphy http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/meridian/309/ "Most of the time, it seemed sublimely unaware of its limbs, though it was beginning to suspect it had hands." -- Rule Date: 2000-05-14 07:39:37 GMT
