A Strange Guide In A Strange Land

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 97023

Fred noticed the distinct shape of a caudal fin of a fish. However, instead of vertical like the average fish it was horizontal like a dolphin's flukes. Added to this deviation from the norm, the fin seemed to be quite large and supporting the weight of something above it as if the fish was standing. He slowly sat up as his eyes investigated further upon the matter. There was a fin on either side of the tail above the caudal fin, then two fins on the 'front' higher up, and then the scales faded smoothly into what seemed to be slightly tanned human skin.

It was just as he thought it could possibly be. A mermaid. Typical blonde-haired, blue-eyed, green-scaled and wearing a pair of white seashells connected by strings made of seaweed. Besides the shin-fins and thigh-fins, there was also a dorsal fin on her lower back (that Fred couldn't see yet) and a fin on both of her forearms. Even though she was a typical mermaid, he had never seen one balance on her tail before. She must have recently left the water as her scales shimmered in the sunlight and her skin had a glossy look to it.

"It's about time that you woke up," the mermaid said while she had her webbed hands on her scaly hips and one side of her fin flopped against the sand. She was doing a dead-on imitation of a human impatiently tapping their foot. "It's been hours since I saved you. The name's Pearl, by the way," she continued. That meant that she had been down to the sea to keep herself wet since she had saved him, probably numerous times.

"You may call me Fred. Thank you for saving me," he replied, deciding not to be formal. "Forgive me for asking, but I've never seen a mermaid stand before, how are you managing to do that?"

"It's not easy but I've taught myself," she answered before she walked on her fin to approach him. It looked rather awkward as her scaly hips swung from side-to-side suggestively. It reminded Fred of a sight he had seen before: a human woman trying to walk in a tight dress. "I'm the envy of some of the other mermaids around here," she said before she flashed a smile at him.

"I can certainly see why ...," he remarked as he watched her walk. Truth be told, he was also remarking on her ample bosom that was contained by the seashell top which was obviously not able to hide her cleavage. "Could you tell me where I am, by any chance, fair mermaid?"

"You are on the Island of Kahalgem," she answered, pronouncing the last syllable differently than the word 'gem'. "I can guide you, if you wish, though I can't take you to a few places," she warned. "The castle due to its distance from the sea and the mountain due to its height. Unless you can find some way to keep my scales wet or carry me with you up the mountain, then I will not be able to guide you," she explained.

"Are you sure you'd be all right guiding me?," he asked, at first confused about where exactly this island was and then concerned about her being out of her natural element for an extended period of time. "Don't worry about me, I'm tougher than I look," she said with a smile.

  1. There was a harbor down south.
  2. He wanted to see how tough she could be in the forest to the east.
  3. He decided to head to the castle without her.
  4. He decided to head to the mountain without her.
  5. He had a few more questions to ask her. It wasn't every day one met a walking mermaid.
  6. He tried to see where else the beach led, allowing Pearl to swim for a while.
