Giants in the Earth

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 9609

"There were giants in the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown."
--Genesis 6:4

Few can say what lies in the limitless frozen expanse of the Northern Waste. Merchants sell maps with the space all but blank, and it's rare to find the explorer who would venture forth into that forbidden land for even the most exhorbitant sums. There are older maps, though, relics of a bygone time, who bear the terse but cautionary phrase "Here there be Giants" emblazoned across the territory. There are wise women, as well, who tell tales after the children are fast asleep. They speak of the lost tribes, the colossi who claim the lineage of the union of humans and fallen angels. They speak of the Nephilim, of the fierce juggernauts Anak and Repha. They speak of the monolithic city, and they speak in harsh whispers, looking over their shoulder as if someone could hear. For you see, though the Nephilim are said to be dead, none know for sure.

These are the implicit perils one must face if one seeks the lost grove of the Seven Sisters Coven...

"There also we saw the Nephilim; and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight."

--Numbers 13:33

Lady Andrea Croix and Jarlath the Finder walked slowly through the titanic ruin, the blind man leading the way, the tapping of his staff echoing off the stones around them.

Andrea breathed in sharply as they went. The colossal city made her nervous, especially the immense glyphs which adorned the archways. Once, something dwelt here. She could only pray it resided here no more...

Night fell upon the forest as they made camp. Astra of Aquilaria built the fire as Lord Frederigo D'Honaire laid out the bed rolls. Only Aethir MacFionn was idle, instead staring up at the sky. It was a gibbous moon shining in the heavens, and it troubled him. Though he trusted in both his dead friend's cure and the warrior woman's resolve, he couldn't be sure. What he had seen in Astra's reaction to the cure had shook him, and had given no indication as to whether she had successfully bested her personal beast. The full moon was nearing, and they might well get a rather harsh answer as to whether the cure worked or not.

Aethir tried to shake the doubts from his mind as he lay down to sleep, Astra taking first watch...

The legendary warrior's sleep was troubled, vivid repeating dreams infesting his mind. Over and over, he saw the ghost of his dead friend. At first, it was distant, but with each repetition it got closer. Somehow, Belboz the Fell was not at rest. That much was certain.

The final dream, though, was the worst. He was reaching out, as if falling, and Aethir simply could not clasp his hand. The last thing he saw was Belboz's visage, trapped in the crystal at the center of the amulet he bore...

Aethir groaned as he rose stiffly in the morning. His companions were already breaking camp, and the journey to find the fourth piece of the amulet would be long indeed...

  1. As they walked along the path, they encountered a party of bandits, demanding a "toll".
  2. As they walked along the path, they came to a crossroads, at which an emaciated man hung in an iron cage, the placard describing his crime long since faded.
