"Who are you talking to, Carl?" Carl almost jumped out of his skin. He
hadn't heard Bob, back from checking on the dragon exhibit, come up behind
him. He heard the person on the other end of the line ask something about
stasis field Beta, but he would have to call them back. Bob was an overweight, balding man with thick glasses [28564]. He was also Carl's boss, a 'Project Supervisor' reporting directly to Sylvia, the Oversight Director for the Allaria projects. Carl held up a hand placatingly as he put his phone back in his pocket. "Just calling to verify my daughter is ok," he said. "I had a text message from the school telling me to call." "Oh," said Bob, mollified. "Is everything alright? I mean, personal calls on duty are not allowed, but that sounds like a special exception. I dont want to be an a-hole." "It's fine," said Carl. "She started a fight with someone because they said my job was stupid." He shrugged. "Being a single dad has to be hard," said Bob, "she is only eight she will turn out just fine. Now, back to work. I wanted to ask you about work site A36. You have it flagged as dangerous, and since you are Safety Supervisor that means no one is allowed near it. We need A36 to make these caves fully operational. What is taking so long, your crews should have cleared it by now." Carl winced, thinking fast. He had not anticipated the normally lazy Bob to double-check his incident reports. Truth is, A36 was the location of stasis field Beta and he needed to keep everyone out of there until it collapsed. "There were pockets of necro-toxic gas detected in that area." "Shit..." muttered Bob. "That stuff requires special equipment to clear out." "We are already over budget on this," said Carl. "I decided to use an alternate method, using a force-fan to dilute the toxic air with--" and Bob interrupted him, shaking his head. "Don't feed me that techie mumbo-jumbo. I don't care how you fix it, I just want it fixed. Sylvia is breathing down my neck. I want a status report by end of business tomorrow. Got me?" Carl nodded, grinning. "Sure thing, boss." "Good. And tell Andrea hello for me," and Bob drove off in his cart again. "I need to put a bell on that cart," muttered Carl. Andrea was his daughter, and he really did have a text message about needing to call the school. Whatever. His ex could handle it. She never wanted to do anything. He considered calling the person he was speaking to previously back, but decided to go to A36 first and check on the beam. Carl got in his own cart, and drove over to the red blinking force field blocking off the work site. At his arrival he was scanned and permitted to pass through. Taking a hover-lift down into the ground, he came face to face with two unconscious individuals.
