But just as she reached to lift down the painting, the door on the other
side of the room opened. "Do not touch that!" a voice from behind her said.
She recognized the voice of Nekarb, and spun around to see him walking in
the door. "Ye do not want to disturb a painting of Inekth Sugran, that be
for sure. It's in the rules, or rather a corollary. In any case, don't do
it." Andrea shook her head. "I do not like the way it stares at me," she said, even though that sounded crazy. "Hah!" said Nekarb, pulling a scroll out of a bag. "You don't have to like it, few do, but you would regret laying a finger on it." He looked over at her tray on the table. "Good! You ate your food and drank your tea. What a good lass ye are." He chortled, breaking the seal on the scroll. "Where am I?" asked Andrea. "What do you want with me. I remember a road, and a carriage, and..." "Hush!" barked Nekarb. "I am to read you this scroll, lass, so shut your mouth if you would be so kind." Remembering something, Andrea rephrased her questions. "I would be glad to answer a question for you in exchange. The old magic?" Nekarb's face twitched, and he grinned widely, exposing his blackened and broken teeth. "You remember, lass! Yes! But first, I read you the scroll, then we can exchange answers. Master's business comes first, yes."
Nekarb reads the scroll... Lady Andrea Croix, you are welcomed to the home of Arteth Sugrani. You will be taken by my loyal servant to the room of envisionment where you will acquire proper coverings. You will then meet me for breakfast on the south terrace. Be welcome in my home, I warn you for your own sake not to leave the walls.
Having read the scroll, Nekarb carelessly threw it into the corner. "As an addendum, I don't think ye should look out the windows either, lass. Now, ye had some question exchange for old Nekarb?"
