The Hitchhikers Guide to the Multiverse

Sealed World - Naebolg

Summary

You do not want to end up in Naebolg. That is the simple fact of the matter. Naebolg is a realm created by the sleeping malevolent dreams of an evil elder god. Said god awoke, sowed destruction throughout the Multiverse, and was eventually destroyed. All that is left of his malevolence is the sealed realm of Naebolg.

Since it was created by the quite disturbing evil dreams of a dark god, Naebolg is a world that does not follow any rules. Anything you know about magic, physics, technology, races, cultures, anything... could at any moment apply or not apply.

Naebolg is mythology in many worlds, but all information on it is usually fragmented and incomplete to just plain wrong. The Gliders from Fred and Astra's world have some of the most accurate Naebolg mythology, but it is out of fashion to believe that it exists.

Some seek Naebolg because it is rumored that powerful magical artifacts reside there (they do) and that they would give their wielder immensely increased magical power if brought back to their home world (they would). However, you can rarely seek Naebolg to find Naebolg.

The insane, the lost, the darkly dreaming, the cursed, they are those who find their way to Naebolg, and it is never a happy occasion. It is said by the inhabitants that few who seek find, and those who are lost can never escape. It is true that occasionally a random portal will deposit an unfortunate traveler in the nether-lands, but thankfully this is rare.

There is no sun in Naebolg, and the placement of the stars is meant to drive men mad, for it is said that the elder gods reach out to snare the minds of mortals from its sky. During the "day" there is light, but it emanates from no specific point in the sky. The sky is never blue, only clearing at night.

Other Names

Naebolg is called the forgotten world, the nether-lands, the shadow kingdoms, by many of its inhabitants. It has other names. In Horace's Tower Pocket Reference it is called Naebolg Nae Zahadra, and is accompanied by an entire page and a half of warnings.

Areas and their Inhabitants

Sug-thoth - the rotted plains - The kingdom of Sug-thoth is ruled by Sugran Tethoth, an abberrent creature, a horror from the dreams of the elder god. It's main inhabitants are the dark dwarves, who worship sug- thoth as a god, and the sugrani, dark horrors from your nightmares. There are human appearing towns in sug-thoth, but they are mainly there to ensnare and trick creatures who find their way accidentally to Naebolg. Sugrani, wearing the "skin" of other creatures, play with these visitors in these false towns, eventually revealing their true nature to either kill the poor souls or drive them mad, in which case they are used as slaves in the capital city of Tethothai.

Actual dwarven cities exist in sug-thoth, but they are all underground. They mine horrid terrible false ore, corrupted with evil from the elder god. All of the dark dwarves are at least partially mad, but retain free will in exchange for eternal servitude to the sugrani.

The last notable feature in sug-thoth is the Traveler's Road, which is a road protected from attacks by creatures and beings from other areas of Naebolg. Once you commit yourself to the Travellers Road, you cannot leave it or you will find your protection void until you return to a check point. The Traveler's Road was created by the sugrani to protect against invasions from neighboring areas, most notably the Dark Dolomite Gliders.

The capital city of Sug-Thoth is Tethothai, a giant city of strange angles and bulbous bulges. It pulses with a dark madness, and it is rumored that the city itself is alive with the malignant will of its master.
