Lord Fred climbed and climbed and climbed, for what seemed like hours but
was more likely around fifteen minutes (Lord Fred needed to get in shape).
The staircase did not end, but he came to an ornate landing leading to a
shadowed hall. Floating at the entrance to that darkened place was a pale
orb of light. "Ah, here we go," said Fred, glad to be off those blasted stairs. There were a couple of wooden benches on the landing, so he gladly took a breather before investigating the orb. "Damn stairs, mages should have some kind of magic teleportation thingee. All this walking, it isnt healthy!" In his defense, this was the common wisdom of the day. After about five minutes, the orb flashed brighter for a moment, and then floated off into the hall. "Confound it!" sputtered Lord Fred, getting to his feet. "Wait for me!" Following the orb, he entered the shadowed hall. The first thing he noticed was the temperature drop, for it was easily forty degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Secondly, the expansive hall was very dark, the only light coming from the faint glow of the light orb a short distance ahead. Finally, the very air was dusty, and tasted flat and old. Lord Fred put on a short burst of speed to catch up with the orb, and followed it through the rest of the hall, until it reached a giant pair of ornate wooden doors. It stopped moving, resting just a few feet in front of them, as if waiting for something. "Is this it?" Lord Fred wondered out loud, scratching his chin.
What would be his next move?
