A Desperate Situation

Things looked hopeless for us. It seemed impossible that we could defeat so many rabbit warriors, and even if we did then there was still the dragon to deal with. Still, I would sooner die in the attempt than be captured, for I knew that having double-crossed the dragon his vengeance was likely to be a terrible one. I felt sad that such a brave and noble knight should have to die with me, though. The only good thing was that Belinda and Carola were safely out of the caverns, but I knew that if we failed to kill the dragon then he might easily recapture them.

Then I saw Fred make a desperate leap for the dragon before the rabbits had a chance to intervene.

1. The dragon was taken by surprise, and before it could react Fred's sword had pierced its heart.
2. With a contemptuous sweep of a forepaw, the dragon swept Fred aside. He fell heavily, hitting his head, and lay unconscious.
3. Before I could see how Fred got on, a rabbit brought a club down on my head and I knew no more.
