Convincing Fred

"My good knight," she began "how will you know unless you try? Your sword looks mighty, and your aim looks sure, and these chains are not really chains, but some magical binding."

"All the more reason for them to break my sword!" exclaimed Fred.

"But Fred, isn't it true that Allarian swords are renown for how they stand up against magic?"

"They are?"

"Great," though Astra, "just when I find a use for that tall- tale, it turns out to be Aquilaria-only."

"Well," said Fred, staring at his sword, "there might be some magical properties in here, after all, this sword is older than the dragon, it's been passed down through my family for generations. I got it myself from my older brother."

"Why does he have to ramble on to himself like that? Why can't he just do it?"

"Um, Sir Fred?"

"Well, actually it's Lord Fred."

"Whatever!" she thought, but aloud she said, "Why don't we test out that claim? Give these magical chains a test blow, and we'll see if they come off. I'm sure nothing bad will happen to your sword."

Fred was uncertain, so Astra added,

"I trust you, I can see that fortune is at your side."

Fred studied her, apparently wondering if it was worth freeing her, and then took a step back, looking sideways.

Fred made sure Velus was out of the way and raised his sword, aiming for the left chain. Astra pulled her arm as far away from harm's way as her chains would allow, and then came the blow.

1. The chain not only broke, it dissolved!
2. The sword bounced off the chain, which remained unharmed.
