And so Lord Fred did quite enjoy his pipe, Sancho did not enjoy giving the rubdown, and we rejoin the present tense right as Sancho finishes re-packing the ointments.

"Well done, Sancho!" exclaims Fred, with a dopey smile. "Man, this is some good sh.. anyway, Plains of Dismemberment ho!" and they set off again.

"Lord Fred" ventures Sancho, "why do they call them the plains of dismemberment? Surely its a metaphor for something."

"Ah!" says Fred, lifting a finger, ready to enlighten the poor ignorant servant... but then he remembers that he doesn't really know. "Hmmm... whose assignment was it to do research on our journey again?"

"Begging your pardon" Sancho replies, "but it was yours. I cannot read sir. You said that some wizard cast a spell on you so that you were able to read and that you would do it. Then you called me an ignorant peasant."

Fred chuckles to himself "too true, and so you are". Fred then frowns, slowing the pace of his horse slightly. "I did not do it. I am sure it is not my fault, but for some reason I became distracted. Oh well, I am sure that they are named that way in an ironic sense." He then nods firmly. "Yes, ironic."

Sancho is not convinced, and thanks the seven-eyed demon god Yrgshhug that he runs fast. He is convinced that this is a skill he will need. "Thank you Lord Fred, I feel much better now."

"Excellent, Sancho my lad." says Fred magnanimously, "you show great promise for a servant with so lowly and worthless a pedigree."

Fred rambles on about how great he is for several hours, and then they make camp. Only four more days journey until the Plains of Dismemberment!

That night, Sancho keeps watch (of course) while Lord Fred gets his beauty rest. After another thorough rubdown, of course. Poor Sancho tries to stay awake, but finds himself so tired that... eventually... in the middle of the night... he falls asleep. With the way Fred snores, that is quite the accomplishment.

While he sleeps, and their camp is unguarded...

What happens?

  1. The magistrate and several poorly armed guards catch up with them. Lord Fred is to be arrested for the murder of the blacksmith!
  2. Their pack mule and horse are stolen in the night. Fred vows revenge, Sancho is blamed!
  3. Fred's horse is stolen in the night. Fred is blamed. Sancho vows revenge!
  4. Fred wakes up to 'drain the lizard' and discovers thieves attempting to steal their things!
  5. Not a damn thing happens. The next morning, they set off again!
  6. We fast forward to when they finally reach the beginning of the Plains of Dismemberment!
