Fred obviously is no match for the bear. He is better off just leaving his stuff behind. Without his stuff, and without a light, Fred pretty much can only wander around aimlessly, since he is practically blind without a light. He runs into walls, bangs his head into low overhangs, and eventually lands in a river.
