Hamel and Lord Fred made their drops throughout the early morning hours. In
each case, Hamel would go to a side door or a back entrance and knock in a
specific sequence (one knock, pause, three knocks in rapid succession,
pause, and a bang). When the person (their faces always hooded or otherwise
obscured) came to the door, Hamel would dig an egg out of the hay in the
cart and exchange it for a bag of coin. What Lord Fred did not understand was why he was brought along. He had literally done nothing all morning than accompany Hamel, and was shushed any time he opened his mouth (the nerve of this peasant). Before the last drop, Hamel went into an alley and came close to Lord Fred. "Baron Fergie," he said, provoking a sputtering from Fred, "listen carefully. This last drop is... special. It is time for you to earn your keep. Do you have your sword?" Lord Fred nodded slowly, "why?" he asked. And then he was told. A stunned Lord Fred opened and closed his mouth silently a few times. "Are you mad?!" he whispered, shaking Hamel by his shoulders violently. "We cant--" "We can," Hamel interrupted, "and we will. You gave me your word you would help me. And no buts!" he interjected as Lord Fred was about to speak. "Or, would you like it if Castellan heard something about a certain knight coming to slay him?" and at this Hamel gave a wry grin. "You wouldn't!" whispered Lord Fred. "You hate the mages!" "Indeed I do," agreed Hamel, "but this last job has to go right. I will pay you thirty percent of what I make, before overhead." "What is overhead on a cart and some dirty hay?" asked Lord Fred incredulously. "Take it or leave it," offered Hamel. "I probably won't warn Castellan either way, but the coin would greatly help you I think." At Fred's reluctant nod, Hamel chuckled. "Excellent! Let's get this done!" A short time later, their cart arrived at one of the ornate homes of the city mages. At the side gate, Hamel used the same knock as before. Unsheathing his sword, Lord Fred prepared to act on the instructions he had been given. The door opened to a man wearing an ornate robe, with a skeletal bird on his shoulder. "What do you want?!" the man demanded, and that is when Lord Fred sprung into action.
What were Lord Fred's instructions?
