"Stay hidden, lass," Fred whispered to Diana as the Troll lumbered toward
them through the shallows. Fred readied his sword then stepped into the
path of the creature. The troll snarled and swung a massive clawed hand at Fred's face. Fred parried the arm with his sword, taking the hand off at the wrist. The troll let out a blood-curdling scream and clutched its injured limb. It lashed out with a clawed foot, splashing Fred's eyes as the foot cleared the water. Fred swung blindly and blinked the water away. When his vision cleared, he saw that the wailing troll had lost a foot to his blade and was toppling into the water. The beast hit the shallows with a splash. The loathsome creature struggled to push its head above the flow with its one good arm. Fred put a foot on the back of its head and shoved it face down into the icy stream. The troll trashed. It was strong and took all of Fred's strength to hold its face below the surface. Fred brought his sword up in both hands and plunged it into the back of the troll's neck. The creature shuddered violently once more, then lay still. "It is safe now, my dear. Let us find that dragon. The sooner I slay it, the sooner we can go home. Besides all that racket will bring every foul creature in this place upon us."
