Fred finds no magics on the gate... But he makes a much more terrifying discovery!

What Sir Fred originally took to be a gate is indeed the maw of a colossal monster.

The Dread Myalimo Simlak Kurussh, the Mountain That Walketh Like A Storm, slept here for an age and is now almost awake due to the tickling of a certain pugnacious Dragon.

The leviathan of the caverns shifts slightly, and even though its movement is minute, it reveals that, below its vast bulk, is a crack and rock chimney gallery that Fred could crawl through... The steepled rock and tumbled boulders form a natural passageway downwards.

Fred would have to time his downward climb perfectly, or else he will be crushed and erased by the shifting bulk of the godlike monster.
